Exhibit Development Process (EDP)
At Exhibit Associates, our flexible company structure allows for principal-level involvement from start to finish on every project. That means clients have direct access to key decision-makers throughout the entire process. With more than 40 years of experience, we specialize in bringing people and history together in engaging, dynamic ways. Our design philosophy centers on transforming information and artifacts into narrative-driven experiences. We move visitors beyond simply understanding the “what” and the “where” — and guide them to discover the “why.” Creating memorable exhibits requires incredible design. Incredible design requires true collaboration. That’s why we’ve developed a structured yet adaptable approach that dedicates our full attention and expertise to every project: the Exhibit Development Process (EDP).

The EDP Framework
Every project is unique. Within the EDP framework, we create interdisciplinary exhibits layered with nuance and supported by a variety of media and interpretive strategies. The result is a rich, textured experience for visitors of all backgrounds. We invest as much time perfecting the overall look and feel of an exhibition as we do in mounting artifacts, lighting displays, and designing graphics. Our structured attention to detail in the early phases ensures cost efficiency and smooth execution in the final phase.
The three phases of the Exhibit Development Process are:

  • Phase I: Requirements Determination

  • Phase II: Design Development

  • Phase III: Fabrication & Installation

Each phase builds upon the previous one. Deliverables from one phase become the foundation for the next. Every phase includes three structured sections:

  • Summary

  • Goals & Objectives

  • Deliverables

Phase I: Requirements Determination
Everything begins here. Phase I is where vision becomes possibility. Through workshops, idea-mapping, physical mapping, interpretive paradigms, and Blue-Sky Explorations, clients define their goals while we challenge perceived limitations with creative solutions. At this stage, the physical world does  not exist. We encourage clients to think beyond constraints and explore impossible possibilities — because that’s where the most innovative ideas are born.

Summary
The intent of this phase is to provide a high-level conceptual overview of the project, including preliminary budget ranges and strategic direction.

Goals & Objectives

  • Identify functional needs and use cases for the space or project

  • Identify potential system influences on other organizational elements

  • Develop a technology adoption plan for initial deployment

  • Establish preliminary budget ranges for management approval

  • Establish an initial overall project timeline

  • Develop a technology support plan

  • Establish a long-term technology roadmap

Deliverables
At the conclusion of Phase I, clients receive a comprehensive report that includes:

  • Initial scope of functionality / scope of work

  • Identification of stakeholders

  • Description of potential concerns

  • Preliminary budget ranges

  • Preliminary project timeline with milestones

  • Conceptual floor plan layout drawing (or other design drawings as determined by the design team)

  • Executive summary

To ensure alignment, we provide a 90% draft of all final deliverables — including the report, presentation materials, and preliminary cost estimates — for stakeholder review. This ensures accuracy, clarity, and suitability before final submission.
The final report includes a complete narrative outlining defined goals, objectives, and key messages that will shape the visitor experience.

Phase II: Design Development
In this phase, ideas take structured form.
Our rigorous attention to detail during Design Development ensures cost-effective solutions and eliminates potential conflicts before fabrication begins. Every design element is refined — from artifact mounting and lighting to graphics and media integration.
By investing deeply in this stage, we create clarity, efficiency, and precision for the phases that follow.

Phase III: Fabrication & Installation
This is where planning becomes reality. With strong foundations established in Phases I and II, Fabrication & Installation proceeds smoothly and efficiently. Our team brings designs to life with quality craftsmanship, precision execution, and careful project management. The result is an immersive, visually compelling experience that fulfills the client’s vision and engages visitors in meaningful ways. Our Commitment The Three-Phase Exhibit Development Process allows project teams to work toward clearly defined milestones and measurable deliverables. Timelines are structured, progress is transparent, and stakeholder reporting is seamless. At Exhibit Associates, we approach every project — every deadline, every milestone — with attention to detail and a clear understanding of the ultimate objective: To create immersive experiences that resonate with visitors and bring stories to life.
